It’s a page out of the soccer and college football playbook for ESPN+. ESPN+ is now home to 150 KHL games this season, including the Gagarin Cup, and this week secured a deal with the Premier Hockey Federation, formerly the NWHL, to serve as the streaming home for the women’s league in the United States. It also opened the door for other leagues to end up under the ESPN+ hockey umbrella. The out-of-market package for the league is now housed on the streaming platform, while there are also 75 exclusive national games streamed on ESPN+ and Hulu, making the NHL the first major North American sports league to have a large part of its national games streaming exclusively. It’s already been well-publicized how important ESPN+ was to the deal from ESPN’s perspective. When ESPN secured NHL TV rights for the national TV A package back in March, it was a flashpoint for hockey programming on ESPN+.
